The Sun King is a dazzling double portrait of Louis XIV and Versailles, the opulent court from which he ruled. ![]() A “devastatingly witty” biography of Louis XIV and the Court of Versailles-at once a historical record of late 17th- and early 18th-century France and a gossip-filled narrative of lovers and rivals, artists and warriors ( The New York Times) ![]() ![]() ![]() Even those of us with the best of intentions and the most loving hearts, even those of us who constantly immerse ourselves in God's word and spirit, are still human, still flawed, still hypocritical from time to time. I found Eliza's flawless, perfect personality and demeanor unrelatable much of the time. And then, those who are wrong, Eliza eventually wins over. I didn't like the way that those who didn't like Eliza were wrong or evil. I didn't like the love at first sight aspect. ![]() The romance was constant back and forth, hot and cold. ![]() The characters were so confused for most of the book, and so was I. I loved the way the story ended in uncertainty bathed in hope, rather just after a marriage. I appreciated the Christian themes on forgiveness. The historical aspect was totally new to me I had no idea that SO many of our people emigrated. What I liked: this is the first civil war period novel that is told from the point of view of southerners (without making them sound like northerners), so that was really interesting to me. ![]() ![]() ![]() The whiteness of the page is illuminated with sentence structures that suggest subtle visual images leaving an afterglow of literary sensuality in the foggy morning light. The fence is a rarely explored figure of the heist film genre, as he notes (Gross 2022:40.07-40.48). Whitehead centers the novellas on the fence, i.e. In typical Whitehead fashion, he offers a refreshing take on the genre. One novella is a classic heist in the form of a hotel robbery, the second follows a revenge plot and the last is set in the aftermath of a third, botched job. The book consists of three novellas, each centering on a different job, or “caper,” as Whitehead prefers to call them (Gross 2022:42:04-42:12). ![]() Harlem Shuffle, published in September 2021, is set in the eponymous neighborhood in the 1960s and follows furniture salesman Ray Carney as he comes to embrace his criminal side. After playing with the conventions of hard-boiled detective fiction ( The Intuitionist, 1999), coming-of-age narratives ( Sag Harbor, 2009) and zombie fiction ( Zone One, 2011), his most recent publication takes inspiration from mid-century heist films and crime fiction (Feldman 2021 Jenkins 2021). A separate contents list and page numbering would help. If you wish to work traditionally these activities can be done in an exercise book, or as a booklet using your own skills in illustration and writing. If you wish to use computer software for your work, this is quite appropriate. Through Jorge, Adam meets Isabel, who also works at the language school. Adam hangs out with Jorge’s friends from the language school where he works. Initially, Adam’s tutor Jorge is his only connection to Spanish sociality. He is provided a Spanish-language tutor to help with proficiency. He ignores invitations to participate in events held by the foundation for its fellows. Adam is well aware of the absurdity of his being in Spain on what amounts to an all-expenses paid, if no-frills, vacation. He keeps this defensive ironic remove from his work for much of the novel, which progresses roughly chronologically. In narration, Adam gives the impression that he is using the term “research” (1) somewhat ironically. The nature of Adam’s project is highly ambiguous. He is on a residency fellowship in Madrid, sponsored by a Spanish foundation for the arts. Adam is a poet from Topeka, Kansas, living in Providence, Rhode Island. Each chapter details the progression of the “research” (1) of Adam Gordon. Leaving the Atocha Station has five chapters.
