Even those of us with the best of intentions and the most loving hearts, even those of us who constantly immerse ourselves in God's word and spirit, are still human, still flawed, still hypocritical from time to time. I found Eliza's flawless, perfect personality and demeanor unrelatable much of the time. And then, those who are wrong, Eliza eventually wins over. I didn't like the way that those who didn't like Eliza were wrong or evil. I didn't like the love at first sight aspect. The romance was constant back and forth, hot and cold. The characters were so confused for most of the book, and so was I. I loved the way the story ended in uncertainty bathed in hope, rather just after a marriage. I appreciated the Christian themes on forgiveness. The historical aspect was totally new to me I had no idea that SO many of our people emigrated. What I liked: this is the first civil war period novel that is told from the point of view of southerners (without making them sound like northerners), so that was really interesting to me.
